A Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee held a hearing on combating global disinformation, particularly from China and Russia. U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) CEO Amanda Bennett testified in the first portion of the hearing, requesting $944 million for her agency in fiscal year 2024 and underscoring its importance in bringing news to other countries amid propaganda from authoritarian regimes. Ms. Bennett is a former director of Voice of America, which is overseen by her agency. Democracy advocates testified in the second portion, giving their professional advice on how USAGM may compete against global disinformation. This hearing took place on World Press Freedom Day. close
