Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas held a press conference after touring parts of the U.S.-Mexico border ahead of the end of Title 42, which allowed Border Patrol agents to turn away migrants on public health grounds. He said there had been a surge of migration ahead of that deadline but that misinformation from human traffickers in Central and South American continued to drive migration toward the U.S. border. He said people entering the U.S. legally would continue to receive regular consideration of their applications for legal protection, while those arriving outside of official channels would face increased scrutiny of their asylum claims. close
