The State Department’s Cindy Dyer and the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Johnny Walsh testified on reauthorization of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee. The subcommittee’s chair, Chris Smith (R-NJ), authored the legislation, which aims for the so-called three P’s: to protect victims of sex and labor trafficking as well as prevent and prosecute such crimes. The officials said partnerships with other nations is a fourth “P” that is vital to their work. They also highlighted specific regions of concern, such as Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion, China’s Xinjiang province, Cuba’s labor program, Venezuelan migrants, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s cobalt mining, and other areas. Finally, members inquired about the Trafficking in Persons Report, which annually ranks other governments on efforts to combat human trafficking. close
