Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and Police Chief Robert Contee testified before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on rising crime in the city. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves also appeared before lawmakers for questions. A frequent topic that came up was that most crimes in the District fall under federal jurisdiction and prosecution, unlike other cities. The mayor along with the other witnesses and lawmakers also discussed District of Columbia statehood. Mayor Bowser and Chief Contee spoke to local reporters after the hearing adjourned. close
