Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) called on President Biden to invoke the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to keep the country from defaulting if the debt limit is not raised. Section 4 of the amendment states, “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.” The senator went on to say though the 14th amendment is not a perfect solution, “it would allow the United States to pay its bills on time, and without delay, prevent an economic catastrophe…it should be exercised if necessary.” Also making remarks were Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), John Fetterman (D-PA), and Peter Welch (D-VT). close
