President Biden held a meeting at the White House with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on the looming deadline to raise the debt limit. Both the president and speaker agreed that default was not an option and agreed that the deficit needs to be reduced. However, both leaders shared that they had disagreements. President Biden stated that he wanted to focus on cutting tax loopholes for the wealthy. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R) added to the president’s remarks, saying “at the end of the day, we can find common ground, make our economy stronger, take care of this debt, but more importantly get this government moving again to curb inflation, make us less dependent upon China, and make our appropriations system work when we get done.” close
