Interior Department officials testified on President Biden’s 2024 budget requests before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs. Assistant Interior Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland requested $4.7 billion for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Education, and the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration--the last of which provides banking and investment services to Native American beneficiaries. Assistant Interior Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Carmen Cantor requested $536 million for her agency--a decrease of about $211 million from 2023. The Office of Insular Affairs is responsible for administering the federal government’s relationship with the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as overseeing treaties with other island nations. close
