They said they had signatures from all 213 House Democrats for a discharge position (a way to bypass regular procedures) in order to raise the debt ceiling, and needed only five more signatures from Republicans to make it possible. Leader Jeffries said about the matter, “Moderate Republicans have said they want to avoid a dangerous default ... It’s now time for House Republicans to break with the extreme wing of their party and join House Democrats to put an end to the default crisis.” Moreover, when asked about compromise, Rep. Jeffries said President Biden already offered to freeze spending at the 2023 level, which was rejected, and that Republicans' proposed spending cuts were too extreme.
