Republican presidential hopefuls Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, Governor Ron DeSantis (FL), Vivek Ramaswamy, Senator Tim Scott (SC), and Larry Elder were among those who spoke at the 2023 Roast and Ride fundraiser, hosted by supporters of Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA). Themes discussed by the candidates and hopefuls included securing the southern border, taking on so-called wokeness and transgenderism, standing up to China, and the U.S becoming more energy-independent. The candidates also criticized federal bureaucracy with Governor DeSantis saying, “this bureaucracy has imposed its will on us for far too long; it’s about time we impose our will on it,” and also promising to fire Trump-appointed FBI Director Christopher Wray if elected as president. According to current polls, Governor DeSantis is ahead of other Republican candidates but trails former President Donald Trump, who did not attend this event. close
