President Biden and Vice President Harris both spoke out against what the president called attempts to “bury history” during a ceremony to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument. Florida recently announced a new education curriculum, one that included teaching students that some slaves benefitted from slavery. Emmett was just 14 years old when he was lynched by white supremacists in 1955. His mother, Mamie, became a civil rights activist following his killing. For his funeral she insisted on an open casket funeral to show the world what happened to her son. The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument will be in Mississippi and Illinois. close
