The House Rules Committee debated proposed fiscal year 2024 spending bills for the departments of Homeland Security, State, Defense, and Agriculture. House Republicans said the bills would secure the border, address the China challenge, and help reduce the deficit, while Democrats argued the spending cuts in the bill would impact national security and give China a competitive edge around the world. The Democrats also questioned why the bills were brought to the committee for a vote while the government faces a shutdown in eight days and urged Republicans to work with them to avert a shutdown. close
