After attending a Republican meeting on the government funding deadline, Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA) said there was not much progress on agreeing on a bill, but there was agreement on the broad goals among the Republican caucus, such as cutting spending and securing the southern border. He also said a shutdown looked inevitable, which Congress needed to keep as short as possible. Rep. Garcia also commented on reports that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was reaching out to Democrats to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as House speaker. The deadline to fund the government was the next evening at midnight. close
