In Garland v. Cargil oral arguments, the Supreme Court considered whether the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has the authority to regulate bump stocks in the same way it regulates machine guns, which are illegal and banned under federal law. A bump stock is a device that enables semi-automatic rifles to fire almost like machine guns. The Trump administration in 2018 enacted a bump stock ban in response to a 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, where a gunman used a bump stock with his rifle to kill 58 people and wound more than 400 others. This was the United States' deadliest mass shooting in history. Shortly after the ban’s enactment, Michael Cargill, an owner of two bump stocks, filed suit.
In a 6-3 decision, the Court later struck down the ban. close
