In a radio address televised live at 10:06 am on CNN, the president spoke about a number of subjects. President Clinton mentioned the conflict in Bosnia and took media questions on that topic during his weekly radio address to the nation. The President indicated that, in the coming days, American war planes may participate in NATO air strikes on military targets around Sarajevo. “The United States has an interest in helping to prevent this from becoming a broader European conflict, especially one that could threaten our NATO allies or undermine the transition of former communist states to peaceful democracies.” The President outlined additional reasons for U.S. participation: to show that NATO remains a credible force for peace in the post- Cold War era; to help stem the flow of refugees this struggle is generating throughout Europe; and to help stop the “strangulation” of Sarajevo and the “continuing slaughter of innocents” in Bosnia.
