President Clinton and Vice President Gore briefed the media on the

vice president’s Report on Reinventing Government. The president

indicated that, as a result of this report, government agencies are

talking to their employees and involving their unions, improving

services, and cutting costs. Eighty percent of the recommendations

in the report are on the way to implementation.

Almost every dollar of the savings this report recommends has been

built into the 1995 budget to help in meeting budget reduction

targets.

The president and vice president discussed several other items in the

report including performance agreements, federal employee early

retirement incentives, the savings achieved from reducing the federal

bureaucracy, procurement reform bills, and civil service reform. Ms. Hyatt described ways the reinventing government programs helped her job performance.

Media questions focused on various aspects of the report and on the Whitewater investigation. close
