This conference of the Irish Republican Army’s political arm, focused on the joint declaration for peace that was signed in December by British Prime Minister John Major and Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds. Mr. Adams gave a speech titled, "Towards a Lasting Peace", addressing peace negotiations with Britain. The conflict in Northern Ireland stems from the question of who should rule the six northern counties of Ulster. The pro-British Protestants want to remain a part of the United Kingdom. The Roman Catholic Irish nationalists believe the counties should be united with the Republic of Ireland to the south. The conflict has led to more than 3,100 deaths in the past 25 years. At this time, talks are at a standstill. close
