President Clinton advised the media that the Summit of the Americas would be held in December 1994 in Miami, Florida. The President said the Summit would be the first meeting of hemispheric leaders in over a generation, and the first-ever hemispheric meeting of democratically-elected leaders. The President indicated that, during the Summit, the United States would consider how to (1) strengthen democracies, defend them collectively, and improve governance and (2) promote economic growth while advancing a strategy of sustainable development that protects the environment and alleviates poverty. close
