Supreme Court Historical Society Executive Director David Pride described the six-part lecture series which will air over several months. This is the first time cameras have been allowed to record an event in the main Supreme Court chamber. Chief Justice William Rehnquist briefly described the series and introduced the lecturers. Professor Belz described the two main issues of this period: the nature of the Union, i.e., federalism, and the nature of society, i.e., slavery. Professor Johnson outlined the southern perspective and Professor Kramer outlined the northern perspective on these contentious issues. This was the first in a series of lectures entitled, “The Supreme Court in the Civil War.” close
