This confirmation hearing was for the position of Deputy Attorney General, the number two position in the Department of Justice. Members of the committee heard from Jamie Gorelick the Defense Departments' General Counsel who was chosen by President Clinton to fill this Justice Department post. Ms. Gorelick has worked in private practice in Washington, D.C. and helped advise Attorney General Janet Reno during her Senate confirmation hearings last year. If confirmed by the full Senate, she would replace Philip Heymann, who resigned in January, citing personal differences with the Attorney General. close
