Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa announced his resignation at a news conference. Recently, Mr. Hosokawa came under attack from the opposition Liberal Democratic Party over his financial affairs. The prime minister said he was forced to step down because the investigation into the allegations prevented approval of his government’s budget. He resigned following allegations that a 100,000,000 yen loan from a Japanese trucking agency was used to fund his election campaign. Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa is the first prime minister in 38 years who was not a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. He quit the LDP last year to form the Japan New Party. close
