Yasser Arafat spoke on the status of the peace accord signed by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and the government of Israel the previous September. According to the accord, the Israeli government was to have withdrawn from Jericho and the Gaza Strip by today, but recent violence in the territories had delayed the withdrawal. The two sides continued to negotiate on Palestinian autonomy. Following his address, Arafat took questions from the assembly. close
