In a brief statement from the White House South Lawn, President Bill Clinton and Mrs. Hillary Clinton expressed their sadness over the death last night of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The President said Mrs. Onassis served as a model of courage and dignity for all Americans and all the world. Following the president’s comments, First Lady Hillary Clinton spoke about her appreciation for the time and consideration that Ms. Kennedy Onassis showed her during the time before and after the election. After the short briefing in the First Lady’s Garden, the president and first lady walked arm-in-arm through the South Portico where the president boarded Marine One in route to California. The First Lady’s Garden, also called the East Garden, was originally planted by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis during her tenure as first lady in the early 1960's. close
