The Joint Economic Committee met to hear testimony on the economic impact of deficit reduction. Witnesses include James Galbraith of the University of Texas and representatives of the Economic Strategy Institute and the Institute for Research on the Economics of Taxation. Joint committees include an equal number of Senators and Representatives, the chairperson is rotated between House and Senate members every two years. Joint committees may make policy recommendations and conduct hearings, generally they are not authorized to draft legislation. close
