President Clinton spoke following speeches by Veterans of World War II. The president spoke about the valor of those who fought in Europe during that period and around the world before and since. He called upon America to “honor the sacrifices that made our nation free and strong.” President Clinton also noted that World War II was an era of sacrifice unequaled in our history, and gave statistics on the number of Americans who died in the Normandy invasion. He reminded us that we must remain vigilant against new threats in Europe, the Adriatic, North Korea, and on bases here at home. The president specifically honored Lewis Puller, Jr., who rest in Arlington National Cemetery, and the “countless heroes he has joined.” close
