Governors Bill Weld (R-MA) made brief remarks, and Mayor Thomas Menino (D) welcomed the governors to Boston where the National Governor’s Association held their annual summer meetings. Also a group from a youth service program that originated in Boston made a presentation about their activities. Governor Carroll Campbell (R-SC) then presented the National Governors' Association Awards for public and private sector service and arts patronization. Senator Don Nickles (R-OK) spoke about the issues involved in health care reform, especially the differences between Democrat and Republican proposals. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the governors. Senator George Mitchell (D-ME) spoke about health care reform, and the Democrat agenda. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the governors. Governors then spoke about the possibility of state governments being obligated by the federal government to pay for certain aspects of the health care reform. close
