Speaking from the Independence Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Hotel, in Washington, DC, President Clinton recognized contributions of Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia at his tribute dinner. “He’s always been unfailingly kind and he’s given me a lot of information I’ve needed and a lot of wise counsel,” said the President. He spoke of the Senator’s contribution to providing three years of deficit reduction in a row coupled with investment in education and training of the American workforce. The president praised the senator’s love of history and devotion to its lessons, his belief that citizenship and public life are honorable and good, and stressed the importance of educating more Americans on the workings of democracy. close
