President Bill Clinton and President-elect Ernesto Perez Balladares of Panama addressed the media prior to their meeting in the White House Oval Office. President Clinton congratulated Mr. Perez Balladares on his election and on the successful democratic transition in Panama. The President thanked him for his interest in the Summit of the Americas and his interest in exercising a leadership role in working with the United States on the problems of money laundering, drug trafficking, and other other international crime issues. Further, the President thanked him for his willingness to help the United States establish safe havens for Haitian refugees. Media questions focused on safe havens for Haitian refugees and on Haiti’s return to democracy. close
