The members of the Senate Banking Committee heard testimony from administration and Resolution Trust Corporation employees concerning the Whitewater affair and the RTC’s handling of the investigation. The witnesses spoke about Department of the Treasury Assistant Secretary Roger Altman’s decision to recuse himself from the investigation and the purpose behind that recusal. Many Republican members of the Banking Committee suggested that Mr. Altman should have recused himself earlier in the process to avoid the appearance of impropriety. In addition to the Senate Banking Committee hearings, the House Banking Committee is holding a series of hearings with the same witnesses concerning the communication between the RTC and the administration. close
