Clinton Economic Plan First Anniversary

Addressing members of the business community on the 1-year anniversary of his economic plan, President Clinton reported that, since he took office, the economy has produced more than 4 million new jobs--almost all of them in the private sector. He said, during the last 7 months, manufacturing jobs have been increasing in this country for the first time in 10 years. The President spoke on his latest budget, noting that it eliminates 100 government programs, contains the first reduction in domestic discretionary spending in 25 years, and continues to drive down the deficit, while increasing funds to empower people to succeed in the global economy. The President said there will be more funds for education and training, Head Start, the establishment of a lifetime learning system for world-class standards in our public schools, and apprenticeships for young people who do not attend college. The President also covered global trade, the GATT, health care reform, and the Crime Bill. close
