Attorney General Janet Reno and other government officals briefed the media on Castro, his government, and its impacts on Cuba. She stated that the United States has in-country processing in Cuba to determine legitimate claims for asylum. She then took media questions that focused on these topics: what is happening to Cubans after they are detained having safely reached the United States; the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act; how long Cubans will be detained after arrival on U.S. shores; whether treatment of Cubans is a change in policy not in legal status; treatment of Cuban and of Haitian refugees; whether an immigration emergency exists in Florida; whether Cubans coming into the U.S. are political or economic refugees; whether Castro is opening AIDS wards and encouraging people with AIDS to come to the U.S.; whether other countries will provide safe havens for them. close
