President Clinton signed the crime bill into law before a crowd of approximately 2000, which included members of Congress, U.S. mayors, and law enforcement officials. Congress passed the $30 billion bill before members recessed for Labor Day. The bill bans assault-style weapons and authorizes life sentences for those convicted of three violent felonies, and also pays for increasing the number of prisons. The President said the new law is a step toward bringing the laws of our land back into line with the values of our people and restoring the line between right and wrong. He also said he will name Vice President Gore to head his Crime Prevention Council. The President said that both he and the Vice President plan to hold forums on crime and violence across the mation. close
