The White House arrival ceremony for South African President Nelson Mandela marked the official start of his state visit. President Clinton stated, “You are living proof that the forces of justice and reconciliation can bridge any divide.” He added that the United States took great pride in the role it played in helping to overturn apartheid and in supporting the free elections, and he reaffirmed his commitment to work with President Mandela to build the new South Africa. close
