Carl Anthony talked about the activities and personalities of all the first ladies, their impact on the political careers of their husbands, and how they were perceived by the press of their day. A 1931 newsreel clip was shown of Mrs. Hoover making a radio address with some Girl Scouts. Mr. Anthony was joined by a panel of women who worked with Jackie Kennedy, Betty Ford, and Barbara Bush, and journalists who covered their time in the White House to talk about the importance of the traditional roles of the first lady as wife and hostess and also about how the roles have changed over the years as U.S. society has changed. close
