Vladimir Zhirinovsky, described as an ultranationalist, discussed the future of Russia. He lost to Boris Yeltsin in a bid for the prime minister post, although his party won a majority of seats in the Russian parliament in the December election. In his speech he said the purpose of his two-week trip to the U.S. is “to give the proper impression of who we are.” He denied anti-Semitism and other racist charges which have been leveled against him. Following his prepared remarks, questions from the audience were occasionally hostile. Russian speakers in the audience objected to some of the translations, too. Translation from Russian to English was by translator. close
