After an introduction by Dean Black, the Chief Justice talked about the process of confirming nominees to the

U.S. Supreme Court and occasions when the independence of the Court and its members has been threatened. The speech came one month after

the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court was rejected

by the U.S. Senate.

The Chief Justice’s speech was followed by a seven-minute vignette on
