At this event during the SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS in 1994 from Miami,Florida the leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico announced the beginning of negotiations to extend the North American Free Trade Agreement to Chile.

Prime Minister Chretien said, “We have been the Three Amigos. Now we will be the Four Amigos.”

President Clinton said he is “proud” to welcome Chile to the NAFTA partnership.

Describing that country as “an ideal partner,” the president said Chile, has benefitted from disciplined and responsible economic leadership.
