The United States Senate began this session with Morning Business. The Senate moved on and continued debating a proposed Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Amendment would require the Federal Government to balance it’s budget by 2002, or two years after ratification by the states. To balance the budget by 2002, the Congressional Budget Office estimates it will take 1.2 trillion dollars in cuts. Three fourths of the state legislatures, (38 states), must approve the amendment before it becomes law. Several amendments to the bill were debated and voted on in this session. close
