A ceremony was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the battle at Iwo Jima. On February 19, 1945, U.S. forces began a 36-day battle for Japanese held Iwo Jima, an 8-square mile Pacific island. The battle resulted in about 26,000 U.S. casualties. About 19,000 Japanese soldiers were killed. President Clinton paid tribute to those Americans who served at Iwo Jima, citing their uncommon valor and courage. “The men and women of Iwo Jima will forever stir our hearts, spur our conscience, and summon us to action,” he said. "With our eyes closed, we can all still see the flag rising atop the hill". He was joined by four Medal of Honor recipients in laying a wreath. The ceremony included colors, a fly-over, and remarks from veterans of the battle.
