Vice President Al Gore discussed the many ways public broadcasting served as a full partner in carrying out our nation’s commitment to public education, particularly for children. The vice president responded to arguments expressed by some members of Congress that public broadcasting was “a frill that this nation can no longer afford or a luxury that could be privatized.” He warned that the attack on public broadcasting was part of a broad assault on programs that enrich the lives of American children. He suggested principles to guide those who were concerned about education and about reshaping it for the future. close
