The Senate voted to invoke cloture on legislation to provide a tax deduction on health insurance for the self-employed. The bill would allow people who are self-employed to deduct a portion of the cost of their health insurance premiums for tax purposes. The House passed its version of the measure earlier in the year, and the Senate was aiming to pass the bill by April 15, the filing deadline for 1994 tax returns, so as to limit paperwork for the IRS. Members later resumed consideration of the disaster relief bill. The measure cuts $13 billion in previously-allocated funds. Of those funds, over $6.5 billion would go toward disaster relief, and the remainder of the money would be used to cut the deficit. close
