President Clinton expressed his and Mrs. Clinton’s condolences to the families and loved ones of the eight Americans killed in the crash of an Air Force plane in Alabama last night. During the press conference, the president focused on welfare reform and discussed the goals he shares with the new majority in Congress. These goals include reducing the federal budget deficit and the size of government, being tough on crime, and supporting the line-item veto. On welfare reform, the president emphasized that time limits are necessary, as well as strict work requirements, tough child support enforcement, and more flexibility for the states. He stressed that the fundamental goal of welfare reform is to move people into the workforce and make them independent. The president challenged Congress to pass a bipartisan welfare reform bill and put it on his desk by July 4. Media questions focused on the surgeon’s general conformation, Russian and Chinese intent to sell nuclear technology to Iran. close
