The participants discussed and took questions on President Clinton’s upcoming trip to Halifax for the G-7 summit. Sandy Berger, Deputy National Security Advisor, explained that Halifax is another building block in the overall goal of leading the international community to build the international economic architecture that will propel prosperity into the 21st century. The pillars of that structure are: opening and expanding the markets, assisting in the transformation of the former communist world into the mainstream of market economies, promoting economic reform in the developing world where five-sixths of the population resides, and promoting the process of reform of the international financial institutions to meet the new challenges of the global economy. Dan Tarullo, Assistant Secretary of State Economic and Business Affairs, outlined the specific agenda for the G-7 summit. Larry Summers, Under Secretary Internal Aids Treasury Department, also made remarks. close
