President Bill Clinton commissioned Second Lieutenant Johnson Chestnut Whittaker posthumously. One of the first African Americans appointed to West Point, Whittaker was assaulted in his fourth year, 1846, in his barracks by three masked men who tied him to his bed and left him battered, bleeding, and unconscious.
