Following introductions, the former Madame Chiang spoke about the history of U.S.-Taiwan relations. Mrs. Soong is the widow of the late president of China Chiang Kai-Shek. She was first lady of China from 1928 to 1949 and, following the overthrow of Chiang Kai-Shek, she was first lady of Taiwan from 1949 to 1975. U.S. senators held a reception for her in recognition of China’s role as a U.S. ally in World War II. close
