President Clinton emphasized his commitment to an increasing federal response to the AIDS crisis. The president stated that, since he took office, overall AIDS funding has increased by 40 percent and funding for the Ryan White Care Act, by 80 percent. He signed the Act today. He said he is pleased the Senate voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize the Ryan White Care Act, and indicated that his budget plan, now before the Senate, would increase funding considerably more. The president stated that the scientific advances in AIDS research should give all of us reason to hope and should redouble our determination, even in this season of balanced budget, to reinvest even more of our nation’s wealth into medical research on AIDS and medical research of all kinds. The president took a few questions from the press. close
