Vice President Gore announced today that the effort by the Republican leadership to roll back public health and environmental protection was stopped by one vote. He indicated that all 17 riders that had been attached to the bill at the specific request of polluters and other special interests were taken out in a close vote that the Republican leadership lost. The vice president asserted that the budget now before the House would not allow the United States to sustain the level of public health and environmental protection to which the American people are accustomed. He said the administration plan would lead to a balanced budget over a 10-year period without needing sacrificing changes in public health and environmental protection. The vice president said that President Clinton will veto this bill if it comes to his desk resembling its current form before the House of Representatives. close
