Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, Mr. Sawyer talked about Medicare reform and other topics. In the newspaper roundtable Mr. Van Dyk and Mr. Di Rita, policy director for Senator Gramm, discussed the headline stories. In the point-counterpoint segment, Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Wilson debated whether the gap in incomes is a given in a capitalist system or whether the gap is a drag on the economic system and can be alleviated by government intervention. Via remote connection from the hearing room, Mr. Schoeff talked about today’s Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs’s hearing on possible smuggling of nuclear material. In the book feature, Mr. Nelson, author of The President Is at Camp David, talked about the history of the presidential retreat in Maryland. close
