Rep. Gephardt contrasted Democratic and Republican proposals for reforming the Medicare system. He emphasized that this debate is so crucial that it is the most important debate in the entire 104th Congress. He criticized that the Republican plan would decimate the Medicare system for the sole purpose of providing tax cuts to those people who need them the least. On the other hand, Democrats want to perform careful modifications to save the program. After his remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
