President Clinton addressed members of several different Nongovernmental Organizations involved in issues of foreign policy at a Freedom House breakfast. He focused on the responsibility of the United States to advance freedom, democracy, and prosperity and preserve the environment. He also noted the blurring of the dividing line between foreign and domestic policy in acknowledging such responsibilities. Efforts to promote the common good at home and abroad can no longer be separated, the president said. “We must continue to bear the responsibility of the world’s leadership,” he added. The president commented that it may be time to shift our thinking from foreign and domestic policy to economic, security, and anvironmental policy. As specific examples of the impossibility of the United States taking an isolationist stance, President Clinton spoke specifically about American troops in Bosnia, assistance in Haiti, and economic support of Mexico. close
