Washington Tuesday Journal Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, Mr. Cohen talked about current events, including Senator Nunn’s decision not to run for reelection and congressional politics in the South. In the newspaper roundtable, Representatives Rangel and Houghton, who are both members of the House Ways and Means Committee, talked about the markup of the Medicare reform bill and other issues. In the point-counterpoint segment, Mr. Forger and Mr. Keene debated whether the Legal Services Corporation should be dissolved and how poor people can still have access to the justice system. In the next segment, Mr. Bettelheim talked about the Colorado gay rights case which the Supreme Court will hear today. In the final segment, Ms. Kazlow talked about President Zedillo’s state visit and U.S.-Mexican economic relations. close
